The naval rank system is a way of formally stating the hierarchy of a naval force. Each rank is meant to identify the experience and ability each person possesses.

In addition to the German Kriegsmarine ranks some men of the Naval reserve or Merchant service served at the rank of Hilfsleutnant, or Auxiliary Leutnant. Some members of the Merchant service served at the rank of Acting Leutnant.
The Master of a merchant ship, in time of war is considered to hold the rank of Captain.
The spellings Leutnant and Lieutenant are used interchangeably in the text.
